The Power of Words: Building Respectful Connections at EdenHill

At EdenHill Communities, we recognize that words matter. They shape how we see each other, communicate, and connect. That’s why our team regularly participates in monthly “huddles” — opportunities for growth, learning, and dialogue on essential workforce topics.

Recently, our huddle focused on “Words Matter.” The goal? To encourage our team to be more mindful of our language, particularly in how we address and describe our residents and one another.

Why Words Matter

Language is more than just a means of communication—it reflects our attitudes and values. When terms like “sweetie” or “honey” are used, they may unintentionally diminish the dignity of the individual being addressed. Similarly, referring to residents by their differing abilities, such as “walkers” or “feeders,” can reduce a person’s identity to a physical or cognitive challenge.

As highlighted in a recent NPR article by Ina Jaffe, ageism and discriminatory language can have profound effects on health and well-being. Jaffe cites research showing that negative perceptions of aging—often perpetuated by dismissive language—can lead to poorer physical and mental health outcomes. One powerful statistic from the article underscores this: “Older adults with negative self-perceptions of aging lived 7.5 years less than those with positive self-perceptions.”

Jaffe explains, “The words we use to describe others—and ourselves—shape how we think and feel. They also shape how others treat us.”

Respectful Communication

At EdenHill, we are committed to fostering a culture of respect and empathy. During this recent huddle, our team explored practical ways to communicate with greater sensitivity, such as:

  • Using residents’ names rather than terms of endearment.

  • Avoiding labels based on abilities and instead focusing on the whole person.

  • Choosing words that uplift and empower, reinforcing our mission to enrich lives through a continuum of care.

By utilizing this mindful approach, we’re working to build stronger, more respectful relationships within our community.

A Call to Action

As caregivers, team members, and advocates, we have the power to make a difference simply by choosing our words thoughtfully. Embrace communication that reflects the value and individuality of every person we serve.
